MAKRO has selected Spryker ecommerce platform

March 10th, 2021. Spryker, a member of our ecommerce platform shortlist in the regional category, has announced Belgian food retailer MAKRO Cash & Carry will be implementing Spryker Cloud Commerce OS for its upcoming ecommerce store. This is Spryker's first customer in Belgium.

Peter de Jonghe, e-commerce manager at Makro Cash & Carry België, commented "replatforming to Spryker is not just the right choice internally, but the right choice for our customers", citing expected improvements in product search, mobile experience and site speed. De Jonghe has been with MAKRO since 1997, joining from Capgemini, and followed a technology career track for several years before his current role.

MAKRO, part of the wholesale division of the huge German retail group Metro, was founded in 1970 and has six large format stores in Belgium. It sells food, party and home (especially kitchen equipment, small items of furniture and furnishings). Its retail offer is value-oriented. Whereas Metro stores in Belgium are limited to catering trade customers, MAKRO's stores are open to all. Its current non-food site at https://www.makroshop.be/nl has both French and Dutch language variations and is built on ASP.NET technology, with Sitecore. Its marketing appears to be very traditional, including the production of weekly sales catalogs online.
