News - Volkswagen chooses commercetools for its ecommerce platform

January 14th, 2021. Commercetools has announced it has been selected by Volkswagen Group subsidiary Car.SW Org to provide cloud-based ecommerce services for the entire Volkswagen Group, including Audi, Bentley, Porsche, Seat and Volkswagen. This will evolve into ecommerce capabilities for complete vehicles, spares, accessories and digital services (including those delivered to a vehicle).

Christoph Möller, head of Car.SW Org, is quoted as saying "a central e-commerce platform is an important component of the brands’ digitisation strategy. We are therefore establishing an attractive, additional sales channel for the group brands, importers and dealers". Möller was previously with Amazon as Head of OEM and Commercial Operations of Motors where he helped Amazon launch a new car leasing service for its first market, Spain, in June 2019.

Car.SW Org (or more formally, the snappily named Volkswagen car.SW Org Wolfsburg AG) is a software company with locations in Germany, US (Seattle) and China (Beijing), founded by Volkswagen Group on January 1st, 2020 in order to create:

  • a "unifying operating system" for the group's vehicles' infotainment systems
  • software to link powertrains, chassis and electrical charging technology
  • automated driving and automated parking control systems
  • platforms for the group's digital business models and ecommerce business

Commercetools is a member of our ecommerce platform shortlist and is a modern, cloud native, API-first, microservices-based ecommerce platform.
